Mary Stark is an artist filmmaker based at Rogue Studios in Manchester. She works primarily with film performance exploring the tactile material properties of the filmstrip and film projection as a theatrical site of wonder and imagination. Mary’s artist filmmaking practice is specifically informed by previous training in textile practice. Since 2012 she has been working on a practice-led PhD developing film performance investigating film as fabric. Mary works physically with a deconstructed skeletal frame of cinema, handling reels of film sculpturally, involving unspooled film projectors to explore the cinematic apparatus in relation to the human body, light and shadow. Her performances focus on film handling practices that have always been hidden in cutting rooms and projection booths, and are now additionally rendered obsolete by the commercial cinema industry.
